Using Laundry Products In High-Efficiency Washers

Using Bleach
Sodium Hypochlorite Bleach
(also known as chlorine or liquid household bleach)
  • Measure the bleach, using the amount recommended by the washer manufacturer (see the washer use and care guide).

  • Carefully pour the measured bleach into the bleach dispenser to avoid spills or overfilling the compartment. The amount of bleach should not exceed the fill line on the bleach dispenser.

  • If there is no bleach dispenser, dilute one cup of bleach in a quart of water and add the solution to the wash water after the clothes are completely wet and the washer has finished filling with water — about five minutes after the wash cycle has begun.
Color-Safe Bleach
(also known as all-fabric or non-chlorine bleach)
  • Available in powder and liquid forms. Check the washer use and care guide for any specific instructions.
  • Some washers have detergent dispensers large enough to accommodate detergent and color-safe bleach; however, it is best
    • not to put liquid and powder products in the same dispenser compartment at the same time, as this may cause "caking" in the dispenser.
    • not to mix a liquid color-safe bleach with a liquid detergent, as this can decrease the effectiveness of both products.
