Laundry Detergent Alternatives - A Technical Review

DETERGENT "ALTERNATIVES" - THE CLAIMS

Typical detergent "alternative" products claim to work by the use of "structured" water. A typical statement that appears in several sales materials claims that the products use:

". . . structured water that emits a negative charge through the walls of the container into your laundry water. This causes the water molecule cluster to disassociate, allowing much smaller individual water molecules to penetrate into the innermost pa rt of the fabric. The Laundry Solution replaces detergent, thus eliminating the use of the chemical. You actually see the results of cleaner clothes without pollutants produced which harm the environment and your family. This is the latest in 21st century technology! In addition to the above, you can discard fabric softeners and no longer need an extra rinse cycle, thus saving water and money at the same time."(1)

While this may sound rather confusing, the claims can be simply restated as follows:

A. "Alternative" detergent products contain a modified form of water.

B. The modified form of water, sealed inside a plastic container, can have an effect on the water inside the washing machine, presumably by "emitting" a negative charge. Specifically, it can cause the water in the washing machine to dissociate into smal ler water "molecules."

C. The smaller dissociated water "molecules" will penetrate fabric similar to the way in which detergent does, resulting in cleaner clothes.

D. The environmental impact of detergent "alternatives" will be lower than that of laundry detergents because no chemicals are used.

This review will examine each of these claims, but first let’s consider the cleaning process.
